Mourning Cart III

8 Hours of Walking with Juri Onuki, two carts, a collection of discarded cemetery silk flowers

Photography by Christina Price Washington

As a continuation of Hur’s Mourning Cart series, the artist invited her  collaborator Juri Onuki to Atlanta for a paired walking performance. Hur mapped out a  route around the urban streets of Atlanta that she was getting to know during her time working as a cashier at Western Union in Underground Atlanta.

Weaving through the streets of a changing urban landscape, Hur and Onuki carried carts full of collected cemetery silk flowers for 8 hours in silence with occasional humming. Over the duration of the performance, the two processed losses both communal and personal in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake that year.
